Sequence

The order matters because each step changes the payback of the next. Air sealing is cheapest and fastest. Insulation comes second. Windows are last and only where the numbers support them.

Comfort

What does weatherization include?
NYSERDA lists sealing air leaks, insulation upgrades for ceilings, floors, and walls, and high-performance windows as the weatherization measures. In practice on Long Island that means attic and rim joist air sealing, attic and wall insulation, basement or crawl space treatment, weatherstripping doors, and replacing windows only when they are failed or the payback supports it.
Is weatherization free in New York?
EmPower+ provides no-cost energy assessments and supports upgrades for low- and moderate-income households. Comfort Home pays $2,500 for a seal-and-insulate package covering the attic and rim joist, $3,000 when walls and floors are added, and $2,000 for an ENERGY STAR window add-on, through participating contractors and conditioned on completing the whole package. Neither is a blanket free program; eligibility is confirmed by address and household before EnergiSense quotes the net cost.
Should I replace my windows?
Only when they are failed, single-pane, or part of a renovation. Air sealing and attic insulation almost always return more per dollar than window replacement. The assessment's infrared scan shows whether the windows are actually a major loss for your house.
How does weatherization affect a heat pump later?
A weatherized house has a smaller heating load, so the heat pump can be sized smaller and run more efficiently. NYSERDA also notes a bonus incentive when a heat pump is installed within 24 months of completing seal-and-insulate work, which is why EnergiSense plans the two together.
Is the federal 25C energy efficiency tax credit still available?
The federal Energy Efficient Home Improvement Credit (25C) ended for property placed in service after December 31, 2025, so it does not apply to 2026 installs. State and utility programs are the incentives that still move the number on Long Island. Confirm your own tax position with a tax professional; EnergiSense models only the incentives it can verify for your address.
